Office Build-out in a Landmark High-Rise / Chicago, Illinois

A software company based in suburban Hoffman Estates approached FDA to participate in their search for a satellite office space in Chicago's Loop. FDA worked with the broker and our client to review the feasibility of a number of potential spaces, and the company decided on a space in the iconic modern landmark, the Inland Steel Building, that would allow for potential future expansion. FDA developed a design approach that adhered to the strict landmark guidelines for the ceilings and lighting while also meeting the client's goal for a sophisticated, urban and light-filled office space.

The office entrance includes a custom, back-lit reception desk standing in front of a steel mesh curtain that relates to the stainless steel columns of the building. Wood panels at the adjacent reception area tie into the mahogany at the reception desk. As visitors move through the office they are pulled inward through an open gallery space with a green wall covered in graphics explaining the philosophy and history of the software company. The green wall turns and leads one into the employee lounge and kitchenette that has glass walls allowing views to the light-filled open office space at the corner with views of the architecture of the Loop. The space is colorful, flexible and exciting giving this software company from the suburbs the urban sensibility that they desired.
