Enrolled in the City of Chicago Green Homes program, this project combines reliable, environmentally sustainable techologies and common-sense building techniques to achieve a sustainable home. One of the "greenest" ways to build is to re-use an existing structure - with this masonry addition to an existing brick home there will be improvements to the existing layout, including a new central stair linking the basement, 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors. The partial 3rd floor roof deck overlooks the rear yard - an outdoor "room" - and garage roof deck, maximizing the usable space of the tight urban lot.
A new geothermal heat pump, utilizing wells that take advantage of the constant temperature of the Earth below ground, will provide heating and cooling throughout the house. Environmentally friendly building materials, superior insulation of the building envelope, and the energy efficient HVAC system will immediately deliver a healthy home while looking to the future.
